May I Have the Envelope, Please?
I know many of you are awaiting the news about the job possibility at the Packard Foundation. While on vacation in New Orleans -- at the Jazz Fest -- I learned that I was one of two people in the finals. Two days later I learned how the First Runner-Up to Miss America feels...crappy! Lucky for me I didn't have to fake a smile and kiss the winner. And the conversation really did unfold something to the effect, "However, if she is unable to serve..." Hmmmm, calling Tonya Harding!
Deborah Storms Jazz Fest
For the third time, I went to four days of unending music and Louisiana food consumption -- incredible! I've just arrived home and I still have a little of the Big Easy with me. [Partially thanks to USAirways for fixing their scheduling screw up (I was to arrive in Baltimore at 4:45pm for a 4:21pm connection?!) by putting me in first class.] In addition to the festival, we went to several local clubs to hear some of the Jazz Fest acts up close: Irma Thomas, Marva Wright, Tab Benoit, Marcia Ball, Boozoo Chavis, Beau Jacques. Very hot days, late nights, lots of dancing (sometimes even with a partner!), being seranaded by a guitar-playing death-penalty lawyer on the banks of the Mississippi under a red moon, beignets at Cafe Du Monde at 4:30am, and a CD buying binge. A terrific time.
Town Meeting Begins
In a daring move, considering I only won by one vote, I missed the first two nights of Town Meeting (see Jazz Fest), however I have not missed the perennial Garage vote. Seems the Town needs more money to build the garage "right." And someone's put an Article on the docket to scrap the whole damn thing. Another chance to take a stand! Also on the 52-Articles docket: should we buy a generator anticipating Y2K emergencies? should a parcel of land be used for low-income housing or remain as conservation lands (the liberal's dilemma vote!)?, should we amend our zoning bylaws to allow for bird forage? (I am NOT making this one up!), and the requisite international issues that every small town faces -- supporting Nigeria's transistion to democracy and supporting a free Tibet.
That's the Deborah News for now. I hope all of you are well.
